Position Overview

The Humanities and Literacy Lead is a specialist in narrative, complex text analysis, and social research. For our 4th–8th grade students, you are the guide for their intellectual deep-dives. You facilitate a sophisticated Readers/Writers Workshop where students develop their voices as authors, historians, and critics.

You turn social studies into active research—whether investigating local history, exploring global ethics, or researching mysteries like the Bermuda Triangle. Your goal is to ensure our students graduate with the ability to communicate with power, empathy, and clarity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advanced Literacy: Lead a rigorous Readers/Writers Workshop that focuses on mentor texts, critical analysis, and multi-modal composition (newsletters, podcasts, essays, and scripts).

  • Social Research: Design inquiry cycles that challenge students to act as social scientists—conducting interviews, analyzing primary sources, and presenting their findings to the community.

  • Communication Mastery: Guide students in preparing for Maker Markets and community showcases, focusing on the art of public speaking and storytelling.

  • Portfolio Curation: Work with students to document their intellectual growth, helping them select and reflect on work that demonstrates their durable skills and literacy milestones.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Partner with the STEM Lead to ensure that Technical projects are grounded in Human stories and historical context.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in ELA, History, Humanities, or Journalism (Master’s preferred).

  • Experience: 3–5 years teaching ELA or Humanities, ideally in a Project-Based Learning (PBL) or Writing Workshop environment.

  • Skills: Exceptional writing skills and a passion for deep, research-based inquiry. Experience with digital publishing or multimedia storytelling is a plus.

Founding Mindsets

  • Radical Trust in Children: You believe that students are natural researchers who deserve access to complex topics and sophisticated texts.

  • The Player-Coach Spirit: You are a lifelong learner who models the curiosity and writing habits you ask of your students.

  • Restorative Heart: A belief that culture is built through relationships. You approach classroom dynamics and staff interactions with a restorative lens.

Compensation

  • Salary: Budgeted at $65,000 annually.

  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits and taxes package (budgeted at 27% of salary).

  • Schedule: Full-Time, Monday–Friday.
